The Fish Ranch should be your go-to Fly Fishing guide service for the Bahia de Los Muertos and Bahia de La Venta fisheries. The owner Mary is super responsive and very knowledgeable of the area, she lives in Baja full time, and can get you set up to fish in most of the fisheries in the south. They provide local expert captains who understand fly fishing. They are able to provide rental gear and have a limited supply of flies to help round out what you may not have brought along. This place is remote, make sure you coordinate any special requests or gear needs well in advance of arriving, you're better off to bring more than you think you'll need, we (the Needlefish) smoked thru better than a half dozen flies chasing Roosters in one three hour sitting. This will become our annual late June destination.

My son and I fished 2 days with the Fish Ranch this last week, mostly fly fishing inshore. Guides Oscar and Tiki were on time, pleasant, and worked hard. On day 2 with Tiki, we had a marlin in the wake and after the fly on the way to get bait. We went way round the back of the island to get bait, like day 1, and there was none to be had. Tiki pulled out a weighted net and threw it out maybe a dozen times or more near shore until we had a bait tank full of sardines. Hard work. We threw flies at dorado, jacks, and some huge roosters. On day 1 Oscar had us into fish all day, and we landed some big Jacks. Big fun. The boats ran well, the gear was excellent; we had a great time.

I signed up for the women’s week as a beginner; it was my first fishing trip. I didn’t know what to expect. Turns out, a women’s fishing trip was the perfect place for me to take my fishing to the next level. I felt comfortable asking lots of questions, had loads of help practicing my casting, and ultimately learned how to reel in some “big” fish! The guides were absolute legends. Each one has a unique style and personality - every interaction expanded my knowledge and experience of fly fishing in picture-perfect Baja. The house was beautiful, organized and spacious. The view was stunning.  The most prized location in town, we made use of all the wonderful amenities. I’m so thankful for the knowledge I gained, the memories I made, and the amazing group of women I now call friends.

We started following The Fish Ranch on Instagram in 2020, the year Mary started her fishing guide business. This was also the beginning of Covid. We had a trip planned to Belize that same year which we had to postpone until 2022. Then in 2023 my husband had back surgery. The Fish Ranch came next in May of 2024. We have been visiting Baja for close to 40 years fishing and diving, mostly in the East Cape area as well as La Paz. We enjoyed 3 days of epic fly fishing while staying in La Ventana. We caught many different species of fish, including roosters, dorado, Sierra and some big jacks. Thank you Mary for providing us with outstanding fishing guides and just a really great time. The Fish Ranch is an outfitter by fisherman, for fishermen. I was connected with an experienced, highly-skilled local guide and we had a very productive day. For me this wasn’t just a ‘sit back and reel them’ in type of charter, like most are. I mean, you could do that if you wanted to, but who does? I left with a cooler full of Dorado, Sierra and Bonita filets, some of which I had the restaurant at the landing prepare for a late lunch. Oh yeah, and a Roosterfish on the fly was the experience of a lifetime. 10/10, highly recommend.

I was nervous going into this trip as I had only ever caught one fish on a fly but it blew my expectations out of the water. I learned a ton and gained so much confidence in my abilities. Mary has planned a spectacular trip- the accommodations are amazing, the captains are knowledgeable & funny, and the food... The camaraderie I found in this amazing group of women is something I will always cherish. Semana hermana forever!

I've stayed at fishing lodges all over the world and the food at The Fish Ranch is up there in my top five meals ever.
